For a sweet little break in our routine, I decided to treat the kids before they get too hyped up for Halloween! In class, we discussed el Dia de los Muertos, or "the day of the dead." We viewed photos of this Mexican celebration from the National Geographic website, and read about the origins of the holiday. We discussed the similarities between the rituals of many different cultures that we perform to honor our departed ancestors; from cleaning gravesite and bringing offerings of food & drink, flowers, and gathering together to tell old family stories. We also compared and contrasted the day of the dead with the American holiday, Halloween. We found that while the root of the celebrations are different, much of the imagery (such as skeletons and the exchange of sweet treats) are actually very similar.
