About the teacherMy name is Mollie Kough, and I am the Art Teacher for the Western Plains School District.
I graduated magna cum laude from Kansas State University in 2008, with my Bachelor's degree in Secondary Art Education. I taught K-6 art for four years in Beloit, Kansas. In 2012, my family and I moved from Beloit to Dighton, where my husband is a Sergeant K-9 handler for the Lane County Sheriff's Department. We have three sons; Logan-6, Sawyer-5, and Rory-2. In my (increasingly rare) spare time, I enjoy sewing, photography, making jewelry, and doing just about anything that allows me to be creative. |
Philosophy of Education |
I believe that my role as an educator is to be a guide, working alongside students and providing support, correction and information when needed, rather than the expert, standing at the front of the room, delivering the same information year after year.
I believe that students require more from education than the ability to pass a test or a quiz or a report We need to develop young men and women of conviction, who understand the responsibilities they have to each other and to themselves. As a teacher, my job is to instill in them pride in learning and to view learning and discovery as a journey that may require hard work, but always offers new discoveries. We have so many students with different needs and abilities and talents, and we need to allow them to showcase their natural skills while providing support and encouragement in the areas they may be weak in. |
Our facilities |
We are fortunate to have a large art studio with plenty of storage and workspace, as well as two potter's wheels, a sink, and a large kiln. Our facilities allow us to explore a wide variety of media and techniques, from drawing and ceramics to glass fusing and even small-scale jewelry work.
