| Open-ended projects can be a little intimidating, because you want so badly to control the outcome of the project, and you want so badly for people to see all the work you put in to teaching these children how to draw...but sometimes it's more important to let kids be kids and just enjoy the moment and the process of creation with them. We created these collages after viewing some cut paper works by Henri Matisse! Each child got a large sheet of white bulletin board paper and a few sheets of construction paper. They weren't allowed to draw out any of their background shapes, because I emphasized experimentation with free-form shapes. Initially, this met with some resistance, but once they got into it, they REALLY got into it!!! They had to play with the shapes to find the most interesting composition before they could glue them down. And once the background was done, they were encouraged to do a figure in black, a la Matisse's famous "Icarus," which can be viewed here: http://www.metmuseum.org/collection/the-collection-online/search/337069 |
